Families relaxing together on the grass at a minor league baseball game

The Main Attraction

A minor league baseball game is one of those places where everyone seems to find their own way to spend an afternoon. Some settle into reserved seats with scorecards and statistics. Others spread blankets across the grassy hill along the first-base line, where children run barefoot, parents unpack picnic bags, and conversations drift more freely than the baseball itself.

As I looked across the lawn, something surprised me. Hardly anyone seemed to be watching the game. At first I found myself wondering why they had come. They had packed up the family, driven to the ballpark, paid for tickets, bought hot dogs and popcorn, and yet the game appeared to be little more than a backdrop.

Then another realization quietly found me.

I wasn’t watching the game either.

Instead, I found myself watching families. Parents laughing with their children. Grandparents soaking in the afternoon. Brothers chasing one another down the hill. Friends sharing a meal without looking at a screen or hurrying to the next obligation. The scoreboard faded into the background as ordinary moments of connection unfolded all around it.

It made me wonder how often we misunderstand the purpose of our own experiences. We think we know why we’ve shown up somewhere, only to discover that something else quietly becomes the reason we’ll remember the day. Sometimes the event itself is only the setting. The real story is unfolding in the conversations, the laughter, and the people beside us.

Life has a way of hiding its deepest moments around the edges of what we think is important. We arrive expecting to remember the main attraction, only to discover that what stays with us is often something else entirely. The people. The laughter. The unexpected conversation. The quiet feeling of belonging.

I still don’t remember much about the game.

But I remember the people.

And perhaps that was the point all along.
